This ain't no sugar tablet

Friends, this morality issue keeps cropping up in unusual places, but in particular, the recent debates about the plan-b pill. I heard today on talk-radio that forcing pharmacists to fill scripts, which, they were morally opposed to, was essentials forcing a leftist, liberal morality on the pharmacists. Well, in my humble opinion, a pharmacist's personal morality extends only to what they choose for themselves and maybe their family. When they impose their morality on others through limiting access to a safe medication prescribed by a doctor, then they are raising their morality to be more important than the health of their patients.

Here is a hint pharmacists, DON'T IMPOSE YOUR MORALITY on your patients.

If you don't like the plan-b pill because you donÂ’t think is moral, then don't put it in your mouth. If you can't handle prescribing the pill, then chose another profession, perhaps Entomology.

If you don't think abortion is moral, why then, don't get pregnant and if you do, then don't go out and have an abortion.

If you think praying to Allah, Christ, Buddha or the Great Grass God is moral that is wonderful. But, don't feed your clients the line of crap that (insert moral compass here) won't allow you to fill this a particular prescription.

Morality is up to you. What you choose for yourself is just that, for yourself. Forcing your values on me or others is not moral, it's just wrong.

I think what all this debate comes down to is the difference between being moral and being self-righteous. To me, morality means sticking to your beliefs no matter what, even if it's not popular or cool, not being a hypocrite but just living your life the way you believe you should live it. This is a personal, private thing that should govern your own choices - not other people's. How YOU live YOUR live should be your own choice, to a degree (drunk driving and randomly firing shotguns into crowds obviously do not fall under the "personal choice" category).

But things like, for example, where you choose to work is in your control. If you don't eat meat, don't work for a butcher or in a deli or hamburger joint. If you have a problem with lingere and think it's inappropriate, don't go looking for a job at Victoria's Secret or Fredrick's of Hollywood. If you want to work at a video store but take issue with porn, work at Blockbuster or Hollywood Video, not Blue Video on Aurora. IF YOU HAVE ISSUES WITH THE PRESCRIPTIONS PEOPLE GET FROM THEIR DOCTORS, PERHAPS YOU SHOULD NOT TRAIN TO BE A PHARMACIST!!!

I think when moral turns into self-righteous is when people feel guilty about their own poor, hypocritical choices (which we all make at times, you are allowed to make mistakes) and decide to choose to champion a cause that doesn't effect them. Then they can feel like they're doing something moral to atone for the bad things they've done, and it really doesn't change anything for them. How many uber-conservative GOP politicians who are constantly up in arms about "family values" have had affairs? Or children outside of marriage? Or have had/do have substance abuse issues? How ironic. . .
